The undefeated Logan Thunder are set to take on Southern Districts Lady Spartans for the inaugural QSL Women’s Div 1 Championship. Thunder handed Spartans their only loss in the regular season, overcoming last year’s QBL Champions by 15 in Round 3.
Logan Thunder have been a force to be reckoned with on the court ever since, dispatching Ipswich in their Semi Final last night by an incredible 62 points.
They’ve got plenty of fire power in their ranks, starting with the powerhouse that is Mikaela Ruef. Her stats speak for themselves, 22.5 points and 18.2 rebounds per game. Add in last night’s triple-double (21 pts, 18 reb, 10 ast) against Ipswich Force after just 26 mins on the court and it is hard to see where she can be stopped.
Mikhaela Cann has been an assist machine this season, averaging 7.8 a game. Cann is no stranger to getting points on the board, averaging 11.7 and has the on-court prowess to regularly set up plays for her teammates. Then you have the likes of Chevannah Paalvast (12.1 ppg), Ashley Taia (11.5 ppg) and young gun Dani Bayes (13.9 ppg) averaging double scoring figures as well and Thunder are looking solid.
If one team can upset their perfect season it’s Lady Spartans and they are ready to turn the tide on Logan. They got the W in their Semi Final over Gold Coast Rollers, but it wasn’t as clear cut as Thunders’ emphatic win. Rollers pushed them to the 4th but key players Kalani Purcell, Rebecca Haynes and Maddy Willey made all the difference.
Willey is formidable, averaging 20.6 points per game this season. Add in Purcell (16.7 ppg) and Haynes (11.7 ppg) who both average double scoring figures and land an average of 9 rebounds a piece per game. We’ve witnessed starters Natalie Taylor and Karli Currie turn on the heat when they needed to this season, adding more spice to this mouth-watering match up.
