Referee at State Championships

Take your refereeing to the next level!

Overview

The Junior State Championships form the cornerstone of Basketball Queensland’s (BQ) referee education and development. From the Under 12 State Championships through to the Under 18 State Championships, referees of all ages have benefited from the educational opportunities that attending a State Championships provides.

BQ provides accommodation, meals, ground transport and education to all referees that attend State Championships, as well as transporting invited referees to the Under 16 and Under 18 State Championships (which are invitation-only).

U12 State Championships

Under 12 State Championships will generally be attended by Development Grade and Intermediate Grade referees, with each association required to provide one referee per team that is entered into the Championship.

The Under 12 State Championship is a 4-day competition and referees will generally officiate 6-8 games across that time. For many referees, this will be the first State Championships that they attend, and we endeavour to ensure that there is a referee educator allocated to each game across the tournament.

Referees may attend more than one Under 12 State Championships, depending on their development as an official.

U14 State Championships
Under 14 State Championships are attended by Intermediate Grade and Advanced Grade referees, with each association required to provide one referee per team that is entered into the Championship. Many of the referees will have already been to a State Championships previously, with the focus being on continued learning and development.
The Under 14 State Championship is a 4-day competition and referees will generally officiate 7-9 games across that time.
U16 State Championships

Under 16 State Championships are the first invitation-only competition in the referee development program, with referees selected from associations based on their performance in junior representative competition and recommendations from their association’s referee manager.

Referees at Under 16 State Championships are introduced to higher-level concepts, with a view to developing them into future senior league (SBL, QBL) referees.

The Under 16 State Championships is a 5-day competition and referees generally officiate 8-10 games across the tournament.

U18 State Championships

Under 18 State Championships form the pinnacle of Basketball Queensland’s Referee Development Program, with referees split into two panels based on experience and ability.

The top panel officiates the Division 1 competition primarily and is focused on the development of the elite qualities of referees at this level. Many officials in the Division 1 panel will also be officiating QBL, SBL and at National Championships.

The second panel officiates the Division 2 & 3 competitions and is focused on developing the skills required to officiate high-level junior basketball, as well as forming the professional attributes of developing referees.

The Under 18 State Championships are invitation-only, with referees selected from the various Queensland associations based on skill and ability.
